7-Day RV Road Trip Through Wyoming, Montana & Idaho

A bucket-list adventure we’ll never forget.

According to CNBC, the #1 place to visit in 2026 is Big Sky, Montana - and after exploring the area in July 2025, we completely understand why. Our 7-day road trip through Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho ended up being a full-on bucket-list dream. We spent months researching the best places to stay, eat, hike, and explore - and now we’re sharing everything so you can recreate the perfect trip.

When to Go

We went in July 2025, and it was perfect:

  • Warm, sunny days

  • Cool, cozy nights

  • Ideal hiking weather

  • No snow-related road closures

If you want peak summer conditions, we thought July was a 10/10.

Renting the RV

We rented our RV on Outdoorsy, and it was the perfect size for four adults (two couples). Sleeping arrangements:

  • 2 in the back bed

  • 1 in the overhead bunk

  • 1 on the convertible table bed

None of us had ever driven an RV before, but the owner gave an extremely detailed walkthrough that made us feel confident. It also came fully stocked — bear spray, trash bags, paper towels, towels, sheets, pots, pans, and more.

Park Pass

We bought the America the Beautiful Pass, which got all four of us into every national park we visited. One pass covered the entire RV!

Annual Pass: $80

Day 1

Arrive in Bozeman, MT → Drive to Idaho

  • We flew out of Raleigh-Durham Airport and while there wasn’t any direct flights it wasn’t too bad. (About 5.5 hours total).

  • Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. We flew in around 12pm.

  • Take an Uber to pick up your RV. The RV we rented was located in Three Forks, MT (about 30 min from the airport).

  • Right next door to our RV pickup was Wheat Montana Bakery & Bread — the best unexpected lunch stop.

  • Drive 1.5 hours to Mountain View RV Park (Arco, ID). We went straight to the campground to familiarize ourselves with the RV hookups, organize/get settled in and catch up on some rest coming from the east coast.

  • Stop for groceries along the way.

Craters of the Moon in Idaho & Jackson, WY

Spend the morning exploring the lava fields, caves, and craters.
We recommend:

  • Inferno Cone (.4 miles)

  • Devil’s Orchard (.5 miles)

  • Indian Tunnel (lava tube cave — bring a flashlight!)

We stopped for lunch at Pickle’s Place! It was delicious and in the right direction to Jackson, WY!

Then:

  • Drive ~3.5 hours to Jackson, WY (This drive is STUNNING)!

  • Wander around Jackson Town Square

  • Dinner + drinks at Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and nearby spots

  • Stay: Fireside Resort

Day 4

Grand Teton National Park

Delta Lake Hike

  • 8 miles round-trip

  • VERY challenging but so worth it

  • Start early! (We started at 8 AM and finished around 3 PM)

  • We saw TWO grizzlies — rent or bring bear spray

  • Pack plenty of water & lunch for the lake

  • The last 0.5 mile is legit bouldering, but even as inexperienced hikers we managed it

Sunset at Mormon Row

  • A scenic 45-minute drive

  • Loved seeing the bison on the way

Overnight: Colter Bay Campground

Day 6

Yellowstone National Park → Big Sky → Bozeman

Morning:

Afternoon:

  • Return RV by 3 PM in Three Forks

  • Dinner at Brigade in downtown Bozeman

  • Relax at Bozeman Hot Springs - A perfect way to unwind after several days of hiking and driving. Bozeman Hot Springs is a local favorite featuring 20+ indoor and outdoor geothermal soaking pools with varying temperatures, plus a cold plunge pool. Surrounded by mountain views, it’s the ultimate recovery stop for sore legs and tired bodies — especially magical in the evening. They also have a small café on-site for drinks and snacks, as well as towels and locker rooms for easy changing.

You can:

  • Fly out Thursday night

  • Keep the RV until Friday

  • Stay in a hotel or Airbnb in Bozeman

We stayed for a wedding and left Sunday — but this itinerary is PERFECT for exploring Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho in 6–7 days.

Our Days 7-9 | Wedding Weekend

Since our trip ended with celebrating one of our best friends getting married in Bozeman, I had to share a quick recap for any brides planning a wedding here — because it was truly magical.

Where We Stayed:
We stayed at Foster Creek Farm, and wow… this place was stunning. So many family members and friends were able to stay onsite, which made the entire weekend feel more intimate. The rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception were all held at the venue, which was incredibly convenient and made the whole celebration flow seamlessly.

Friday:
The girls kicked off the weekend with a Pure Barre class in downtown Bozeman — such a fun, energizing way to start wedding festivities before prepping for the big day.

Saturday — Wedding Day:
I can’t say enough good things about this venue — the setting was absolutely beautiful. My favorite detail of the entire night? After the reception officially ended, the party kept going by the fire with a live acoustic guitar player.

Sunday:
We opted for an afternoon flight home — and after the wedding festivities and open bar… let’s just say we were VERY thankful we didn’t book the 6 AM option. 😄

It was the perfect ending to one of my favorite trips ever and the sweetest way to celebrate our friends, Devon & Kevin! 💗
