A Local’s Guide to Belhaven, NC: Coastal Charm on the Pungo River
If you’re looking for a quiet little escape on the water, Belhaven, NC, should be on your list. My parents have a house here, so I’ve been coming for years—and let me tell you, this small town tucked along the Pungo River is full of charm. Think a cozy inn, great food, a creative arts scene, and plenty of ways to enjoy the water. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, wander around Main Street, and really soak in small-town coastal life. Here’s how we’d spend a weekend in Belhaven, NC!
Where to Stay:
Between Water & Main Bed & Breakfast
For the full Belhaven experience, check into Between Water & Main, a beautiful Victorian-style bed & breakfast right in the heart of town. It’s walkable to the shops, restaurants, and marina, and the rooms are full of cozy touches that make it feel like home. Bonus: the breakfast is home-made using locally sourced ingredients!

Where to Eat:
If there’s one spot you can’t miss in Belhaven, it’s Spoon River. This farm-to-table restaurant is known for its creative, seasonal dishes and vibrant atmosphere. The menu changes often depending on what’s fresh and local, but you’ll always find beautifully plated meals, craft cocktails, and a wine list that rivals big-city restaurants. The space itself feels like a mix between an art gallery and a cozy bistro. It always feels like a special occasion dining here, even if you’re just celebrating a Saturday night.
A Belhaven classic! This bakery and café is the perfect place for lunch or pop in for a sweet treat. Their chocolate chip cookies are amazing, but don’t sleep on their lunch menu either. Think hearty sandwiches, fresh salads, and daily specials. The Mad Batter has a relaxed, small-town vibe where you’ll likely bump into locals catching up over coffee.
When you’re in the mood for comfort food, head to Jack’s Tavern. Their menu has a little bit of everything: burgers, steaks, seafood, pasta, pizza—you name it. It’s the perfect casual & welcoming spot to come in and relax after a day exploring or on the water.
Pro Tip: Order the “Jack’s Choice” pizza… SO GOOD 🍕

Bistro 1904 at River Forest Manor
This newer addition to Belhaven’s dining scene is inside the historic River Forest Manor, and it brings an upscale yet relaxed dining option to town. The menu features French-inspired dishes with a coastal Carolina twist—filet mignon, fresh crab cakes, rotisserie chicken, and more. The dining room has elegant touches but still feels warm and inviting, and if the weather’s nice, you can’t beat the riverfront setting.

No trip to Belhaven is complete without stopping at Farm Boys, a waterfront staple that’s as casual and charming as it gets. Order at the window, grab a seat outside overlooking the Pungo River, and dig into fresh seafood baskets, burgers, or one of their daily specials.
